Documenting Down Under

WHEN 16 COLLEGE STUDENTS (AND RECENT GRADS) SET OUT FOR AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, they were embarking on an abroad unlike any other. Led by award-winning writer/producer and associate professor of digital media and journalism Stephanie Bauer, this excursion was a multicultural and multimedia deep dive into the cinematic island nation. The group of students and budding filmmakers explored urban environments and arcadian vistas, ultimately producing nine small-group projects including a handful of documentary films.

One such documentary, Mohimohi Moana covered a Marra Moana, or “ocean garden,” an innovative, long-term approach to marine conservation that was concepted, created, and cultivated by the Ngatiwai Ki Whangaruru Whenua Topu Trust.
