Phillip Huber (C’73)

Innovative puppeteer

Destiny has been known to zig and zag, but occasionally she reveals herself early.

Phillip Huber’s path to becoming the “greatest marionettist of our time” began early, when the five-year old received a Howdy Doody puppet. By the time he headed to Principia College, his mother’s advice to “study something you can make money at” was too little too late: Huber had already earned his tuition money by staging marionette shows.

Today, Huber is a preeminent marionettist, performing worldwide–from LA and New York City to Paris’s Lido and the Casino Monte Carlo; he has performed with Jim Henson and the Muppets, and built and manipulated puppets that can be seen in Being John Malkovich and Oz the Great and Powerful.
